Josh Beckett tossed a fine 3 hitter as the Illinois Gamblers beat the Tacoma
Rainiers by a score of 6 to 1.
Mike Napoli had a big day with his bat. He slapped a base-hit which brought
home a run in the 1st inning, lifted one out of the park for a two run home
run in the 3rd inning and doubled bringing home two baserunners in the 7th
inning. Illinois totaled 11 hits on the night.
Beckett(1-0) got the victory, allowing 1 run for the game. Ian Kennedy(0-1)
suffered the loss. He allowed a few too many baserunners giving up 10 hits
and 2 walks in 6 and 2/3 innings.

Shortstop J.J. Hardy lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 3 RBI and
Justin Verlander racked up an impressive total of 11 strikeouts at SAFECO
Field as the Illinois Gamblers beat the Tacoma Rainiers by the count of 8 to

Hardy had a big day with his bat. He cracked a two-run shot in the 2nd
inning, stroked a single in the 6th inning and doubled knocking in a run in
the 7th inning. Illinois finished with 11 hits in the victory.
Verlander(1-0) was credited with the shutout, his first of the year. Clayton
Kershaw(0-1) took the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 11 hits and 4 walks
in 8 innings.
Verlander was pleased with his performance. He noted, 'I had good command of
all my pitches. Just as important, my location was right on.'
