WEB GEMS- Bot 5th: Jay Bruce robbed Michael Saunders of a Homerun!
James Shields pitched a 3 hit shutout and catcher Alex Avila blasted a homerun
and had 2 RBI at SAFECO Field as the Williamstown Purple Cows beat the Tacoma
Rainiers by the count of 7 to 0.
Shields(5-1) was virtually untouchable. He didn't allow much, just 3 hits and
1 walk in 9 innings lowering his ERA from 3.00 to 2.44. Williamstown rapped
out 8 hits for the night.
Brandon McCarthy(0-2) was the loser. He gave up just 2 runs and 3 hits in 6
innings. When questioned about his counterpart after the game, McCarthy was
lavish in his praise, 'It was obvious very early on that we were going to be
in for a long night. Shields brought his 'A' game with him - he had good
stuff and was able to spot it perfectly. He probably only made one or two
bad pitches the entire game!
